WHO WE ARE

Visual Element is a public arts component of the EastSide Arts Alliance and a visual arts graffiti training program for high school youth. Because it is the only "Urban Graffiti Arts" program in East Oakland serving high school youth, Visual Element attracts graffiti writers, usually young people ages 15-20 primarily from Oakland but also the greater East Bay. Our workshops facilitate the production of authorized graffiti murals while offering youth the opportunity to participate in intensive, hands-on apprenticeship programs alongside established third-world artists while earning money. Creating public art, visible to the entire community, sends the message that productive and self-sufficient youth can contribute positive change to the neighborhoods. Murals educate, motivate to action, and inspire more creations of beauty.

In the tradition of Diego Rivera and Siquieros, we support the development of political muralists and cultural workers that can beautify our neighborhoods and transform our experiences into images on a wall. All of our students identify as artists, and seek art-related careers and job opportunities. Visual Element provides a positive, community-based outlet for creative expression that many young graffiti writers would otherwise find in illegal painting.

Second, it facilitates a broad curriculum in aerosol art, hip-hop activism, computers, graphic design, portfolio development, business etiquette, and mural production that is rooted in a popular form of youth culture. Third, it provides a legitimate employment training opportunity for young artists in an artistic environment where they can maximize on the skills they already have. Visual Element presents a unique opportunity for non-profit organizations, community-based groups, schools, and local vendors to beautify their surroundings while funding a youth enterprise. And finally, it promotes healthy intergenerational relationships between youth and caring adult artists.
